Count pop princess Cyndi Lauper as the latest artist to shift stylistic gears with a country album.

Cyndi, best known to fans for her ’80s and ’90s pop singles like “Time After Time” and “Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” is releasing an album of country classics, aptly titled Detour, on May 6.

Cyndi is joined by a number of special guests for the album, including Emmylou Harris on the title track and Willie Nelson on “Night Life.” Vince Gill, Alison Krauss and Jewel are also featured on the record. Cyndi has chosen two Patsy Cline classics for the album, “Walkin’ After Midnight” and “I Fall to Pieces.”

The colorful singer has evidently been a country fan for decades. “When I was a really young kid, country music was pop music, so this is what I grew up listening to,” she notes about Detour. “These songs are part of my earliest memories.”

So perhaps we can say that, with this new album, Cyndi is showing her “True Colors.”
